Barkitecture: Design for Dogs

The evening of May 24th, 2012 marked a very special event for both Ripple Design and the Seattle design community. The design competition and auction, hosted by Luxe magazine, at the Seattle Design Center benefited the Seattle Humane Society and Seattle Children’s Play Garden. These two very deserving charities each deserve a place in the spotlight and we were more than pleased to participate and offer our design services.

The event showcased the dog house designs of ten teams, each comprised of an architect (Jim at Ripple Design Studio), builder, Interior Designer, and Landscape professional. The night also featured a ‘Parade of Dogs’ costume show, which was a hoot to watch and experience. Our team, titled ‘Team Ripple’ designed a unique furniture piece titled “Bau Wau Haus” that draws its design inspiration from the classic Bauhaus movement (pronounced Bow House) of 1920s Europe, led by architect Walter Gropius.

Bauhaus design focuses on the creation of a ‘total’ work of art in which all arts – including architecture – are brought together to create universal design appeal inherently appropriate in any context. The Bau Wau Haus was presented a s a dog create or doghouse alternative. Designed as a unique furniture piece, Bau Wau Haus is suitable to weather the outdoor elements, but is intended and best suited to enrich the interior of any home.

The Bau Wau Haus included space for two small dogs, featured bamboo hardwood cabinets with adjustable shelving for storage, Brazilian Ipe hardwood lattice system with gate access from the front and rear, a limestone stop, concealed leash mounts, and a dog bed and coordinating accent pillows.

Enough talking..how about some video footage and photos!

Here is a video of the ten doghouses:
